Omeka: Collaborative Image Annotation

Omeka is a free, flexible, and open source web-publishing platform for the display of library, museum, archives, and scholarly collections and exhibitions. We use a heavily modified install to demonstrate the possibilities for information sharing in various research and teamwork applications. In particular Omeka seems well-suited to first-sweep spatial data analysis. Ideally researchers would review a map or image resource together (over distance, potentially) before breaking it down for detailed evaluation or analysis in GIS.

The way Omeka works is simple: collaborators are given accounts, which are tied to alterations and notes they make to images (as well as the associated metadata). We also have a couple of examples of alternative uses of the application. This website serves as a working demo.

Most of the currently available collaborative image annotation software out there is for medical purposes - so doctors can trade back and forth and review cases. We could find none that were purely web-based and easy to use.

Collaborative website design, image analysis and extended possibilities for use
One of the main reasons we pioneered use of this tool in this manner was to show its versatility. Evaluation, exploration and translation of map materials is a way researchers might use Omeka, but you could also use it for something like website design review. Unfortunately it's only annotation, a truly 'wiki' image evaluation tool would allow…
